Unisphere
Filed under: Landmarks, New YorkUnisphere is a 140-foot high steel globe found in Flushing Meadows park in Queens, New York. It was built for the 1964/65 World’s Fair. It was donated by the United States Steel Corporation. It has been used as a back-drop for many TV shows and movies including Men in Black, The King of Queens and The Amazing Race 1.

Coit Tower
Filed under: California, LandmarksThe Coit Tower is located atop Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. It was built to “beautify” the city with funds donated by Lillie Hitchcock Coit. It is 210 feet tall and is made of concrete.

Seville Cathedral
Filed under: Religious, SpainThe Cathedral of Seville is formally known as Catedral de Santa maria del la Sede (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See). It’s construction began in 1402 and was completed in the 16th century. It is the largest Medieval Gothic religious building in the world. The tomb of Christopher Columbus is located within the Cathedral.

Il Duomo di Milano
Filed under: Italy, ReligiousIl Duomo di Milano is the 2nd largest church in Italy behind St. Peters Basilica in Rome. It is also the second largest Gothic cathedral in the world after the Cathedral of Seville in Spain.
In the picture above, the front of the church is covered by scaffolds during a renovation.

Ponte Vecchio
Filed under: Bridges, Italy, LandmarksThe Ponte Vecchio (Italian for Old Bridge) dates back to the 14th century. It spans the Arno river in Florence and is filled with shops. It is said that the concept of bankruptcy originated on the Ponte Vecchio. When a merchant could not pay his debts, the table where he sold his items (“banco”) was broken (“rotto”) by soldiers.
