The Washington Monument is an obelisk that is located at the western end of the National Mall.  It is a memorial to first U.S. President George Washington.

Construction was started in 1848 and was completed in 1884.  It stands at over 555 feet tall and is visited by more than 800,000 visitors per year.

The Tomb of the Unknowns is a monument in Arlington National Cemetary that is dedicated to American soldiers who have died but not been identified.  The Tomb has an inscription that says: “HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY AN AMERICAN SOLDIER KNOWN BUT TO GOD”.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. honors the soldiers killed and those unaccounted for during the Vietnam War.  The memorial actually consists of three parts: Memorial Wall (seen above), Three Soldiers statue and the Vietnam Women’s Memorial.

The White House is the official residence and workplace for the President of the United States of America.  The address of the White House is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C.  The property is owned and maintened by the National Park Service.  Construction was started in 1792 and completed in 1800.  Since then it has undergone many renovations including reconstruction after it was gutted by fire in 1814 during the War of 1812.

The U.S. Capitol building serves as the location for the Congress of the United States.  It houses both The Senate and The House of Representatives.  The Senate is located in the North Wing and the House of Representatives is located in the South Wing.  The first session of Congress at the current location was held in 1800.

The Lincoln Memorial, on the extended axis of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is a United States Presidential Memorial built to honor 16th President Abraham Lincoln. The architect was Henry Bacon, the sculptor was Daniel Chester French, and the painter of the interior murals was Jules Guerin.

The building is in the form of a Greek Doric temple and contains a large seated sculpture of Abraham Lincoln and inscriptions of two well-known speeches by Lincoln. The memorial has been the site of many famous speeches, including Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered on August 28, 1963, during the rally at the end of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
